What to visit?

Lisbon

The beautiful capital of Portugal, located along the Tagus river, has many interesting sights. Visit the S. Jorge castle, get lost in the narrow charming streets of Alfama, have a drink in Bairro Alto, go shopping in Chiado and Avenida da Liberdade, and enjoy the green gardens along the river in Belém.

Outside of Lisbon one can also visit Cascais, a beach town with great atmosphere or Sintra, a charming hilly city surrounded by nature with the gorgeous Pena Palace sitting on top of the hill.

Eat: Pastéis de Belém, the best pastries you have ever tried, made only in the oldest factory of pastéis in Portugal, located in Belém.

Porto

The second largest Portuguese city is located at the Douro's river mouth, and is connected to Vila Nova de Gaia, the city on the other side of the river, by 5 bridges. Porto is a magical city with a medieval centre and many points of interest spread on its hills. Don't miss Estação de São Bento (a gorgeous train station), Aliados, the D. Luis bridge and the lively Santa Catarina street. Go across the river to Gaia to visit the Port wine caves, and learn about the making of the famous dessert wine, finishing it off with a wine tasting (usually included in the ticket).

Eat: Francesinha, Porto's speciality, a sandwich made of several layers of meat, sausages and ham, deep in sauce and covered in cheese. You will feel like you deserve it after walking the hills of Porto.

Douro Valley

The Douro Valley, in the North of Portugal, goes from the city of Porto to the eastern border of the country. It is home to the Port wine production and has a unique scenery sculpted by the hilly vineyards and the Douro river.

Peso da Régua is a medium sized city located in the heart of the Douro Valley. It is surrounded by wine estates, where one can visit and enjoy wine tastings.

Pinhão is a charming little town, at about 30 Km from Régua (30min. by train). It is located by the Douro river at the bottom of very steep hills where grapes are grown. Don't miss it!

How to get to there?

Get to Porto, Portugal

You can fly to either Lisbon or Porto, the two biggest airports in Portugal. Porto is the closest airport. If you fly to Lisbon you can then take the train to Porto (Alfa Pendular).

Airport in Lisbon - Estação do Oriente (train station)

Metro - From Lisbon airport take the metro to Oriente (only 3 stops). Tickets are sold at vending machines. Once at Oriente follow signs to "Comboios" (trains) and after a few minutes and a couple flights of stairs up you will be at Estação do Oriente, the train station.

Taxi - The taxi ride is about 10 minutes and it shouldn't cost more than €10.

Lisbon - Porto

Train tickets can be bought online, from two weeks before, at cp.pt or just before you board at the counter in the train station. Alfa Pendular is the fastest train making the connection Lisbon-Porto, taking about 2h30 and it goes several times a day. You will get to Porto - Campanhã (train station).

Estação do Oriente

Get to Peso da Régua

Train - Trains to Régua depart from both train stations in Porto: São Bento or Campanhã. Travel time is about 2h and there are several trains a day.

Cruise - The nicest and prettiest way to get to Régua is traveling by boat in the Douro river. The landscape is breath taking and there are several cruise packages to choose. Some include the boat ride, with breakfast and lunch on board, a night in a hotel in Régua and the train ride back to Porto. More information can be found here. The packages are flexible and adaptable (for instance if you want to stay more than one night in Régua, just contact the company). If you choose this option we advise you to not do it the same day as the party.

Taken from the cruise

Car
- There is a road along the Douro river that was voted the prettiest car ride in the world. If you don't want to miss it, rent a car and drive your way there.

The address for Quinta Vale de Locaia is:

Quinta Vale de Locaia
5100-387 Cambres – Lamego
